DRIVING/HIKING DIRECTIONS TO REACH SEQUOIA HIGH SIERRA CAMP ~ (12 MILE ROUTE)

A longer option (12 total miles) for hiking to the Sequoia High Sierra Camp traverses the Twin Lakes trailhead, which is reached from the Lodgepole Campground in Sequoia National Park (elevation 6,740 feet).

Guests do not need a wilderness permit for day hiking to or from the Sequoia High Sierra Camp. The only time a permit is required, is if you plan to camp overnight enroute to the camp (along the Twin Lakes trail). More information, wilderness permits and directional maps can be obtained at the NPS Wilderness Desk at the Lodgepole Visitor Center (open 7-11 am and Noon-3:45 pm).

The Twin Lakes Trail begins at the Lodgepole Campground. Start up this trail and you will soon come to your first junction. Make a right here (following the sign to JO Pass/Twin Lakes). Cross the rocks of Silliman Creek and continue past Cahoon Meadow and up to Cahoon Gap (elevation 8,640 feet, approximately 4.5 miles).

Continue downhill into Clover Creek (short hop across creek) and take the left fork at the next junction towards the JO Pass (an uphill climb for 1.9 miles). Continue for the next 3.2 miles (moderately flat/downhill) and take the right fork at the next junction (elevation 8,995 feet).

Continue to the Camp, which is located in the area known as the Giant Sequoia National Monument at the edge of Jennie Lakes Wilderness. Elevation Gain: +3,604' - 1,744' = +1,860' total.

Trail travel times are largely dependent on the physical fitness of the hiker. Most Camp guests carrying a full daypack and lots of water average 2 miles per hour. In addition, a good rule of thumb is to add an extra 1/2 hour for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

Please note: If you choose to hike the 12-mile route to reach the Sequoia High Sierra Camp, we offer the convenience of return shuttle transport to the Lodgepole Campground parking lot. This option is ideal for guests who would like to experience the Twin Lakes Trail one way only, with a ride back to their car upon departure. The fee for this shuttle service is $75 per person; advance reservations are required.
